A Webinar on ICT Cooperation between India and Vietnam
in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic

The Embassy of India in Hanoi in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Communication of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is organizing a Webinar on ICT Cooperation between India and Vietnam at 1500 hrs. on 29th June 2021. Experts from India and Vietnam in the ICT sector will exchange views and share strengths and opportunities of both countries in the ICT Sector, which has acquired a new significance in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic during the Webinar.

Vietnam is emerging as one of the hubs for Digital and Information and Communication technologies in the ASEAN region with reputed Multinational Tech companies such as Samsung, LG, IBM, Intel, Oracle, Canon, Fujitsu, Foxxcon establishing their manufacturing bases in Vietnam. The ICT sector has contributed immensely in boosting exports for Vietnam while offering attractive investment destination for major ICT companies of the world. Under the National Digital Transformation Strategy, Vietnam is targeting to achieve 20% of its GDP from Digital Economy by 2025 and 30% by 2030. Under this Strategy, Vietnam is focussing on developing Digital Government, Digital Economy, Digital Society and establishing Vietnamese Digital Businesses. Towards this goal, Vietnam has taken measures for developing hi-tech parks, concentrated information technology parks, developing 5G mobile network infrastructure, promotion of online public services and e-commerce through indigenous platforms, developing cloud computing technology, ensuring safety and cyber security, capacity building in artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), data science, big data (Big Data), Cloud Computing, Blockchain etc.

Similarly, under the Digital India Mission, the Government of India aims to transform India into a digitally empowered society and economy by offering digital infrastructure as a core utility to every citizen, providing governance and services on demand and enabling the digital empowerment of citizens.  The Digital India Mission relies on growth of nine pillars; namely Broadband Highways, Universal Access to Mobile Connectivity, Public Internet Access Programme, e-Governance, e-Kranti - Electronic Delivery of Services, Information for All, Electronics Manufacturing, IT for Jobs and Early Harvest Programmes.

India has emerged as the hub of digital capability with globally recognised competitiveness in providing IT services. The revenue of the Indian IT industry stood at around US $175 billion in 2019-20 with exports accounting for about US$ 147 billion. In terms of FDI inflow, India’s computer software and hardware sectors attracted the second-highest FDI to India with US$ 71 billion inflows coming in 2020-21. India is also one of the preferred destinations when it comes to setting up Global Capability Centres (GCCs) with 50% of all the GCCs being located in India. Our IT industries have been developing expertise in 5G technology, cloud computation, technologies that supports e-Governance, sustainable technologies such as environment-friendly batteries, renewable energy sources & management of power systems; as well as in emerging technologies such as adoption of AI, Blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), Robotics, 3D Printing and Immersive Media etc.

Over the years, the ICT sector has emerged as a promising area of cooperation between Vietnam and India. Many Indian IT companies have already established their presence in Vietnam. These companies contribute to augmenting ICT capacity of Vietnam through IT training and by providing IT solutions and services in banking and finance, telecom, travel technology and cyber security etc. The Governments of India and Vietnam have established institutional mechanisms to facilitate cooperation in the ICT sector which was highlighted again in the India Vietnam Joint Vision Document for Peace, Prosperity and People adopted by the Prime Ministers of India and Vietnam in December 2020. The Webinar would invite IT companies from India and Vietnam to identify focus areas of cooperation.
