Commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Bodhi Tree at the Tran Quoc Pagoda, Hanoi

Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in association with the Embassy of India in Hanoi organized an event on 22 December 2019 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the planting of the Bodhi Tree at the Tran Quoc Pagoda in Hanoi.

Sixty years ago, in 1959, during his State Visit to Vietnam, President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad along with President Ho Chi Minh had planted at the Tran Quoc Pagoda a sapling of the Bodhi Tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya some 2600 years ago.

Speaking at the occasion, Ambassador Pranay Verma recalled the significant contributions of Buddhism in strengthening the millennia-old cultural and civilizational connection between India and Vietnam. He expressed his gratitude to Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and its leaders in making the India-Vietnam relationship a global example of mutual trust, empathy and understanding.

In their remarks, the Standing Vice Chairman of the Executive Council of Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Most Venerable Thich Thanh Nhieu, and the Chief Abbot of the Tran Quoc Pagoda, Most Venerable Thich Thanh Nha, highlighted the contributions made by India in the development of Buddhist traditions in Vietnam. They noted that the commemoration event was a symbol of the long-standing friendship between the peoples of India and Vietnam.

Members of Vietnam’s Government bodies, National Assembly, monks and scholars from Buddhist organizations, media, friendship organizations and various cultural institutions attended the event.
