In an effort to promote cooperation between Vietnam and India in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the Embassy of India in coordination with Vietnam’s Association of Foreign Invested Enterprises organized an Interactive Meeting on 8 October 2020. The focus of the interaction was on cooperation in the start-up and smart cities.

In 2015, Government of India launched its flagship programme ‘Digital India’ with a vision to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. This program is centered on the vision of offering digital infrastructure as a core utility to every citizen, providing governance and services on demand, enabling the digital empowerment of citizens. Besides policy making facilitation to the IT industry and start-ups, the Government of India has also adopted state-of-the-art ICT for its own transformation for efficient and effective delivery of information and services to citizens at large.

Over the years, IT and ITS have emerged to be a promising area for cooperation between India and Vietnam. Many Indian IT companies have also established their presence in Vietnam to provide IT training, IT solution and services especially in banking, telecom, cyber security etc. Several Indian Start-ups have established their presence in Vietnam in travel technology and financial technology. In 2020, when the whole world confronts destruction from the COVID-19 pandemic, information and communication technology has emerged as an effective tool for governance, fintech, education, business, office work and social connect.

Vietnam has emerged to be among the key players in ASEAN in ICT sector. In June 2020, Government of Vietnam approved National Digital Transformation programme to 2025, orientation to 2030. Vietnam aims at raising the digital economy’s contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) to 20% by 2025 and 30% by 2030 and bringing Vietnam into the top three digital governments in ASEAN by 2030. Vietnam also plans to launch 5G network series soon.

The Interactive Meeting has the participation of representatives of a number of Indian companies providing IT and Smart City solutions which have established their presence in Vietnam and representatives from Vietnamese Ministries, Provinces and Companies. The meeting provides good opportunities for interaction to forge new avenue of cooperation in the areas of start-ups and smart cities.
